Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 cup Short grain sushi rice This rice sticks well for rolling.
  • 4 sheets Nori sheets Use 'sushi nori' for best results.
  • 1 cup Fillings of choice (e.g., cooked shrimp, imitation crab, avocado, cucumber) Mix and match based on preference.
  • 2 tablespoons Soy sauce or tamari For dipping.
  • 1 tablespoon Wasabi Optional, for a kick.
  • 1 tablespoon Pickled ginger Classic accompaniment.

Method

Preparation
  1. Prepare the sushi rice according to package instructions, seasoning it with rice vinegar, sugar, and salt.
  2. Lay a sheet of nori shiny side down on a bamboo mat.
  3. Spread a thin layer of rice over the nori, leaving about 1 inch at the top edge.
  4. Add your chosen fillings in a line across the bottom third of the rice.
  5. Lift the mat and roll it up tightly over the fillings, keeping it snug.
  6. Wet the bare edge of the nori with a little water and finish rolling to seal.
Serving
  1. Slice the rolled sushi with a sharp knife, wiping the blade with a damp cloth between cuts.
  2. Serve with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger.

Notes

When making sushi, feel free to experiment with fillings. Consider serving with miso soup or cucumber salad for a complete meal. Keep nori sealed until ready to use to prevent it from getting chewy.
