Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 lb ground beef (85 or 90 percent lean) Can substitute with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
  • 1 large green cabbage, chopped Chop into bite-sized pieces for even cooking.
  • 1 medium onion, chopped Builds the base flavor.
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced Enhances flavor; do not skip if possible.
  • 28 oz crushed tomatoes or tomato sauce Crushed tomatoes provide a heartier texture.
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste Adds richness to the sauce.
  • 1 cup beef broth Chicken broth can be used as a substitute.
  • 2 cups cooked rice White rice, brown rice, or cauliflower rice for a low-carb version.
Seasonings
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large deep skillet or Dutch oven, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned, breaking it up as it cooks.
  2. Add the chopped onion and cook for a few minutes until softened. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for about 30 seconds.
  3. If there is excess grease, drain off some, but leave a little for flavor.
Cooking
  1. Toss in the chopped cabbage and stir for a minute to start wilting it.
  2. Add the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, and broth. Season with salt, pepper, paprika, and Italian seasoning.
  3. Bring to a gentle simmer, then cover and cook until the cabbage is tender, about 20 to 25 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Once the cabbage is soft, stir in the cooked rice and let it warm through for a few minutes.
  5. Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Add more broth for saucier or simmer uncovered for thicker consistency.

Notes

Cut cabbage into even pieces for uniform cooking. Ensure to use cooked rice to maintain the right texture. Taste before serving to adjust flavors.
